Benjamin Franklin was a prolific inventor, not least of medical devices. Because his brother suffered from various urinary problems, he invented the first flexible urinary catheter — made of bendy silver wire and covered with animal stomach casings.

Most of us produce 1.5 litres of urine a day, depending on how much we drink and other factors. The bladder can hold between 400-600 ml of urine, but we start getting signals to empty at around 200 ml.
